Bucephalandra Chimaera is a distinctive variety whose name hints at its unusual, multi-faceted character. The long, narrow dark leaves display a striking iridescent sheen that shifts in appearance depending on the angle of light, while red stems add a bold structural accent to the overall plant. This combination of narrow leaf form, deep color, and shifting iridescence gives Chimaera a visual complexity that few aquarium plants can match.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Chimaera can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Native to the rivers of Borneo, Indonesia, Bucephalandra Chimaera can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate. Like all Bucephalandra, it carries the enchanting ability to produce small white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Chimaera reaches 6 to 8 inches in height, making it one of the taller Bucephalandra varieties. It thrives in low to moderate lighting and grows well without CO₂ supplementation, though CO₂ and liquid fertilization will enhance the depth of its iridescent color. Water temperatures of 72 to 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 provide ideal conditions for this variety.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Chimaera's greater height makes it suitable for midground placement where its narrow, iridescent leaves create graceful movement in the current. The long leaf form provides a pleasing contrast to round-leaved plants and compact foreground species. Placing it where aquarium lighting catches the leaf surface at different angles maximizes the color-shifting effect that makes this plant so captivating.
Bucephalandra Chimaera is a sophisticated choice for aquascapers who appreciate botanical variety and iridescent beauty. Hardy, adaptable, and endlessly fascinating to observe in a well-maintained planted tank.
