This is a classic Penny Red from Great Britain, issued in 1841 as the successor to the world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black. It features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and based on William Wyon’s portrait. Printed in a rich red-brown shade, it carries the corner check letters “D – B”, used to identify plate positions. The design includes the ornamental side frames and star devices in the top corners. This issue was perforated later (1854 onwards), as earlier versions were imperforate. The Penny Red is a cornerstone of Victorian philately and highly prized among collectors for its historical importance and plating varieties.
