Bleeding Heart Tetra

Bleeding Heart Tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma) is one of the most immediately recognizable and popular large tetras — the vivid red spot on the body just below the dorsal fin creates an unmistakable 'bleeding heart' effect. Erythrostigma means 'red mark' in Greek. Males develop dramatically elongated dorsal fins that become more impressive with age.

Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Native to the upper Amazon in Peru and Colombia — soft, slightly acidic streams. A larger and more robust Hyphessobrycon than most in the genus.

Keep in groups of at least 6. Males may be mildly aggressive toward each other — keep multiple females to diffuse attention. The bleeding heart spot becomes more vivid in well-conditioned fish.

One of the finest large tetras for planted aquariums — the red spot, tall dorsal fin extensions, and deep laterally compressed body create an impressive fish.
