Bucephalandra Red Purple is a striking small variety whose leaves develop a deep reddish-purple tint with a shimmering iridescent quality that intensifies under good aquarium lighting. The combination of rich pigmentation and metallic shimmer gives this plant a jewel-like appearance that makes it one of the most desirable color varieties in the Bucephalandra genus — a plant that looks increasingly spectacular the more closely it is observed.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Red Purple can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Red Purple can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to rock or driftwood at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. Red Purple shares the beloved genus trait of occasionally producing small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
This variety grows to 2 to 4 inches and does well in low to moderate lighting. CO₂ supplementation is not required but enriches the depth of the red-purple coloration. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 are ideal. Regular liquid fertilization, particularly with iron-containing formulas, supports the richness of the purple-red pigmentation.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Red Purple provides warm color contrast that is unusual and highly valuable in the planted tank. It works beautifully on dark driftwood or pale stone in the foreground, where the reddish-purple coloration is most visible. Pairing it with bright green mosses or light-colored Cryptocoryne maximizes the color contrast.
Bucephalandra Red Purple is a rare and beautiful plant for aquarists who want genuine warm-toned color in a low-maintenance, hardscape-compatible form. One of the finest color varieties in the genus.
