Indigo is a hand dyed cotton fabric and among the oldest to be used for textile dyeing. The dye process is long and complex. Leaves from the Indigo plant are first crushed into a pulp, rolled into balls, and then left to dry in the sun for two to three days. Indigo is a symbol of wealth and prosperity and because of its high value was often referred to as blue gold.
