The definitive art and photography book celebrating Flaco the owl's spectacular year of freedom.

"Almost from the moment he was reported loose, Flaco became a metaphor. The only member of his Eurasian species suddenly free in America, with no experience at making a living in New York, Flaco was the kind of immigrant that the city has long known and nurtured." - Carl Safina

Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl spent more than 12 years living in a small enclosure in the Central Park Zoo, until the night of February 2, 2023 when an unknown liberator cut a hole in the steel mesh of his cage and set him free. Though zoo authorities and park rangers spent two weeks trying to trap him, convinced that Flaco couldn't survive on his own, Flaco proved them wrong, learning to hunt, fly, and make the city his own.

FLACO is the comprehensive visual book which captures Flaco's incredible year of freedom, documented by many of the key photographers who followed his sojourns across the city. The book highlights the work of artists, across a range of media from totem poles to stitchwork, who were inspired by his story, and is the sole publication to feature the memorial objects left at the base of Flaco's favorite oak in Central Park, after his death.

A metaphor for freedom and a profound story of survival, the comprehensive look at Flaco's year in New York will inspire readers for generations to come.
