Trachycarpus fortunei , commonly known as the Chinese windmill palm or Chusan palm, is a versatile and attractive palm tree that adds a touch of exoticism to various environments, especially in regions with temperate or mild climates. 

Origin: Trachycarpus fortunei, is a species of palm tree native to parts of China, specifically the provinces of Fujian, Hubei, and Sichuan. It is one of the most cold-hardy palm species and is widely cultivated in various regions around the world. 

Appearance: Trachycarpus fortunei is a slow-growing palm tree that can reach a height of up to 12-20 meters (40-66 feet) in ideal conditions. It has a single, slender, fibrous trunk covered with a layer of brown or black hair-like fibers. The trunk is typically narrower at the base and widens towards the top. The leaves are fan-shaped and can reach a length of about 1.5 meters (5 feet). They have deeply divided segments and are typically dark green in colour. 

Cold hardiness: Trachycarpus fortunei is known for its excellent cold tolerance and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). This adaptability to colder climates makes it a popular choice for landscaping in regions with milder winters. 

Growth and care: This palm species prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, although it may require some protection from intense afternoon sun in hotter climates. Trachycarpus fortunei is relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the tree can help retain moisture.
