Unlike "Big Vicious" released in 2020, this is the most improvisational ECM work by a quartet since "Cross My Palm with Silver" released in 2017. M-9 features a poetry reading of Israeli poet Zelda Schneerson Mishkovsky's poem "Departure" by Avishai Cohen. Its themes are abandonment, acceptance, and liberation, which seem to harmonize optimally with the mood of the music. The drummer on this album is Jiv Ravitz, who had participated in the previous album "Big Vicious," released in 2020.
