Jazz Modes, an experimental small jazz formation featuring Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Julius Watkins and Gildo Mahones on piano. The group recorded a total of five albums, with some variations among the members. Most of them are now hard to find. This album contains all of the LPs in chronological order. Charlie Rouse was a member of big bands such as Billy Eckstein, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington. Notably, he was a member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet for over a decade. One of the first and perhaps the best jazz French horn players, Julius Watkins has played with many greats, including John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Johnny Griffin, Randy Weston, and the Jazz Composers Orchestra. Rouse and Watkins are fronted by Oscar Pettiford's "Oscar Rides Again," the only other Jazz Modes album to feature both Rouse and Watkins on the front line, which is very rare. As a bonus, this album also includes three more albums issued as 10" LPs.
