Houston Person
Description:
Veteran tenor saxophonist Houston Person pays homage to Rudy Van Gelder, with whom he maintained a friendship until his death! The work recalling Rudy Van Gelder, who recorded most of his works, was of course recorded at Van Gelder Studios. Passing through the bebop and hard bop eras, and for a time in the world of soul jazz, it is safe to say that his playing style has established an era. There is an analogy that Houston Person's playing has much in common with ideally brewed coffee. Both are bold, satisfying, smooth, eye-opening, and addictive once the taste is experienced. Whether it's a smoldering bluesy tune, an up-tempo old standby, or a sultry late-night ballad, he never fails to deliver.Houston Person returned to Van Gelder Studios in good spirits and recorded this album with a quintet formation featuring the very strong members Russell Malone (g), Larry Fuller (p), and Lewis Nash (ds). The 10 songs on the album are a collection of great tunes, and a clear story for the album has been extracted from each of them. The title tune, "Reminiscing at Rudy's," is a tribute to legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Houston Person's first recordings as a leader were made at the legendary Inglewood Cliffs studio there, and the friendship continued until Van Gelder's death. This album is by no means a mere backward-looking memorial album. There is still much more to be seen in the performances of Houston Parson, who is still active in his lifetime.
