Details: Amazon.ca Jamaican-born Jarvis Church (born Gerald Eaton) is actually one of half of Track & Field, the production team responsible for Nelly Furtados breakout debut. In addition to his obvious production skills, this multi-talented artist was also previously the lead vocalist for the Philosopher Kings in the early 90s. Back in the mix and dropping his own debut (another Track & Field production), Church is looking for a taste of the same success he helped Furtado achieve. And, in fact, he has even enlisted Furtados aid on the sexy Fine Line. Not that Church needs much help. Shake it Off is an old-school, soulful pop album reminiscent of Lenny Kravitzs early work, but with a slightly updated sound. Thankfully, though, Church keeps that sound organic, not trying to dilute the soul and emotion with pointless, booming hip-hop beats. Theres even an occasional smoky guitar solo, like on the sultry That Old Love Song. But this album is all about Churchs ample talents as a singer/songwriter. His Motown-inflected croon is strong and sweet, a joyous outpouring of emotion. Shake it Off is a remarkable debut, but considering Churchs track record, its not too surprising that he achieved so much his first time out. --Adem Tepedelen
